Tallgrass Knitting: Knitting Tool Kits

I really like knitting tool kits. I have several. I keep one in my craft room and one in each of my different project bags. Plus, I have a tiny emergency kit that I keep in my purse as a “just in case”. So, when I was building Tallgrass Knitting (my Etsy shop), it made perfect sense for me to include Knitting Tool Kits in my offerings. Pictured above are some of the kits that I offer. I will absolutely talk more about my kits at the bottom of this post. But first, I’d like to share some other kits I’ve found and my thoughts on building your own kits.

As with all things, you can go as big or as small as you would like for a knitting tool kit. Late last year I did some research on many different knitting tool kits for a podcast. Here are some of the great choices I found:

On the “Go Big” end, the Akerworks knitting tool kit looks pretty great. The kit container is an ingenious little plastic caddy that comes with several notions and plenty of storage to add other bits that you love to personalize it.

On the “Go Small” end, I found this kit that has lots of bits for around $13. The kit really does have a lot of pieces for the price. When I looked closer I found that many of them are not items I would actually keep in my knitting bag. I tallied up all the pieces I would keep and found it contained: 20ish stitch markers, one yarn snip, one sharp metal needle, one blunt plastic needle and one cloth tape measure (but no way to corral the tape measure).

In the middle of these two options, there are some pretty great options available on Etsy. (As a side note, when I did a “knitting tool kit” search on Etsy, I noticed that my Summer Prairie, Sunflowers Bag, Autumn Prairie and National Park tool kits were all pretty high up on the first search page!!!)

Some of the other kits that caught my eye as great choices are:

Many, many, many different choices in rectangular tins and other shapes/sizes by TheSexyKnitter.

The knitting essentials Kit by HanksYarningCo and their smaller (super cute) round tins for generic stitch markers.

Or, you can build your own kit. It can be a lot of fun to find the exact bits that you want to include. One note of caution – unless you make multiple kits at once your cost will be more pricey than buying one already made knitting tool kit.

If you’re building your own knitting tool kits, The Perfect Notions Case is a great start. And here is a list of other bits I suggest you consider including: a knitting needle gauge, some sort of cutting utensil, some sort of tape measure, stitch markers, blunt tip sewing needle, bent tip sewing needle for weaving in ends and tiny crochet hook or emergency stitch fixer.

I used that list as a starting point for my Knitting Tool Kits for Tallgrass Knitting. I had so much fun building my Knitting Tool Kits packed with essential tools for knitting! It took me months to find and gather just the right pieces and I’m super happy with the curated collection of knitting tools in each kit . I tracked down collaborators for the beautiful wooden needle gauges and sunflower zippered bags. I love that each kit pulls together all of my favorite knitting tools into one sturdy and compact container. Plus, I love that buying the pieces in bulk means that I am able to offer knitters about a 35% discount from buying the tools individually!

I hope this post gave you some great ideas for finding or building knitting tool kits.
