Knitting Bags

My go-to knitting bag for years has been the heavy duty clear plastic kind with zippers and purse-like handles. I’ve got them in multiple sizes from small sock-sized projects to huge sweater-sized and larger projects.

Recently I decided it would be fun to branch out and try other kinds. So I spent my birthday fun money on four new-to-me different bags. It was fun sorting through all the available options. I did my window shopping and ordering online since that seems to be the main way to make contact with the crafters who are making knitting bags these days. I’m sure I could find some of them at conferences or wool festivals too. But for this summer online was all I could manage.

A quick search for “knitting bags” and “knitting project bags” on Etsy gave me so many options I had a hard time narrowing down my choices. I asked around and got recommendations from friends and I looked at companies I knew I’d heard about either in passing or as advertising on my podcasts. I ended up with 4 different bags from 4 different companies. They are all very pretty and make me happy to see sitting on my WIPs shelf.

Two of my four new bags are simple drawstring projects bags in medium sizes. Both were low cost and seemed like a good way to get the best bang for my buck.

This one from missfiberfox is approximately 6″ x 6″ x 10.25″ tall. The product description says it can hold three 200 yard-plus skeins easily and that is absolutely true. Right now I have four 4-ounce skeins of fingering weight yarn in it and there is plenty of room for the project on needles too. Easy open, easy close, pretty and simple.

This one from brightcraft is about 11.5″ in height and 19″ around. This one is sold to hold 2-3 skeins of yarn and has handy inside pockets for tools and notions. Right now I have one 100-gram ball of fingering weight yarn and my Sockhead Cowl in it easily. This one feels slightly less sturdy than the blue one above so it crumples very easily into my purse as my on-the-go knitting. Ages ago I used to carry my on-the-go knitting in ziplock baggies in my purse and the plastic baggie would get holes leaving the yarn unprotected. I absolutely don’t expect this cloth bag to do that.

I splurged a little on my next two. One was the bag that a friend loved the most out of all of hers. And the other I’ve heard podcasters gushing about. They were more pricey so that meant I could get fewer total bags with my allotted fun money. That made it was a little harder to click the “purchase” button on these. But I love them both and definitely think they are worth the price now that I see the level of work and detail and materials that went into each one.

This one from tanneicasey is her XL zippered knitting project bag and is about 17″ wide on top, 12” wide at the bottom, 10” in height and 5” deep at the bottom. The product description says it will hold five 100 gram skeins of worsted weight yarn with room to spare and it definitely will. It also stands on it’s own making it really easy to use. It has a couple of interior pockets and feels sturdy enough to stand up to being tossed and hauled around….while at the same time being soft to the touch and lightweight to carry around. Right now I have two 4-oz balls of 280 yards each DK weight yarn in this bag with all of the notions and extras for two different projects with plenty of room to spare. I’m really loving this bag!

And finally this knitting project bag from ZoesBagBoutique. This is her small size Kipster project bag with organizing pockets designed for knitting in public or knitting while walking. This size measures about 9″ tall and 5.5″ in diameter. It has exterior zippered pockets for notions and a metal loop to hold while zipping the bag and for attaching things like scissors. Plus pockets circling the interior of the bag. And the whole thing is lined with durable nylon. All of her products notes are helpful and show the thought and work that went into getting the design just right for crafters. I really love this one! When I’m ready to look for another knitting bag, I’ll be going back to look at this same bag in a larger size and her other options.
