The Turquoise Trail Pullover, Turquoise Trail Cowl, and Turquoise Trail Shawl feature textured cable panels. These designs are named Turquoise Trail because the southwest-inspired textured cable panels evoke both cabochons of turquoise and trails. The “cabochons” are formed with Lifted-Over Knot Stitches and the “trails” are simple 2/2 cables.
The Lifted-Over Knot Stitches are new to me. Here I’m sharing a quick photo tutorial and video to walk you through the process.
The process happens over several rounds. You make a knot on the first round, knit the knot stitches for the next three rounds and then make another knot to form a beautiful, oval/round design that very much looks like a gemstone cabochon to me.
In the pattern, the Lifted-Over Knot Stitch reads “using the right-hand needle pick up the 3rd stitch on the left-hand needle. Lift this stitch over the 1st and 2nd stitches forming a bar over those stitches. Then knit 1st st, yo, knit 2nd st.”
Here is a link to a short video of the process:
If you prefer step-by-step photos, here is a look at the process:
Lifted-Over Knot Stitch
Pick up the third stitch on the left-hand needle.
Lift this stitch over the first and second stitches. Using the right-hand needle pick up the 3rd stitch on the left-hand needle. Lift this stitch over the 1st and 2nd stitches forming a bar over those stitches.
Knit the first stitch.
Work a yo (yarn over) then knit the second stitch.
Here’s a closer look at that same knit 1, yarn over, knit 1 from the back.
Knit all three stitches on the next three more rounds. This forms that beautiful oval/round bit that I mentioned earlier. Then work the knot stitch again. This completes the oval/round shape and makes it into the cabochon.
