Travel: Quick Trip to Chicago

We took a family trip to Chicago this summer. Both teens are busy these days and it is not easy to get away. But we decided to drop everything and do it anyway. I’m always so glad when we make time for a trip like this. I love seeing new things and I love spending time with my favorite people.

We mainly stayed in the downtown Loop area of Chicago for this trip. It was excellent being able to walk to so many things – the river, Lou Malnati’s for pub-style and deep-dish pizza, the “bean”, Chicago’s famous mixed cheese and caramel popcorn, and the nearby city parks.

We also squeezed in a college tour and the Shedd Aquarium.

I think the favorite for all of us was seeing the musical Hadestown at the CIBC Theater (also within walking distance from our hotel). It was really, really good and hadn’t been on my radar at all. The older teen picked it because they love the music and we all loved it! It’s a modern retelling of the Greek stories of Orpheus and Eurydice plus Hades and Persephone set in a New Orleans jazz scene with the small pit orchestra right on the stage and part of the action.

Part of the trip was to show both teens a city where public transportation is easy and can get you almost anywhere. We tried out a Metra subway line and rode the “L” all the way around the loop.

As always, I’m glad we went and I’m glad to be home! If you do any traveling this summer, stay safe and have fun!
