Tutorial: Attached I-Cord Neckline

The applied I-cord neckline that I use on many of my patterns differs slightly from a more traditional one. I want to share a bit here about how I do it on my patterns. Most of my tutorials include both photos and a video of the process. For this one, I made a longer 3-minute video and skipped the step-by-step photos.

Here’s a video of my process.

For a 3-stitch attached I-cord, you always work with the 3 stitches left from the last row of I-cord you worked and one stitch you pick up without knitting from the original neck cast-on.

The instructions in my patterns look like this: “K3, slip the next stitch as if to knit, k1, pass slipped stitch over the picked-up neck stitch. Then pick up (without knitting) 1 neck st on the left-hand end of the needle and slide all 4 stitches to the right-hand side of the needle, and pull the yarn snug; repeat from * across all of the neck stitches.”

I really love how this particular process works smoothly across both knit and purl stitches as you can see here. And I love how snugly it attaches to the original stitches of the neckline to add a pretty yet sturdy finish to the garment.

As with all things knitting you have choices, if you prefer the traditional process a quick google search of “attached I-cord” will find you many great tutorials and videos.
