Tutorial: Lifted-Over Knot Stitch

The Turquoise Trail Pullover features textured cable panels frame the neck and bottom of the body and sleeves. This design is named Turquoise Trail because the southwest-inspired textured cable panels evoke both cabochons of turquoise and trails. The “cabochons” are formed with Lifted-Over Knot Stitches and the “trails” are simple 2/2 cables. The Turquoise Trail Cowl features the same textured cable panels.

The Lifted-Over Knot Stitches are new to me. Here I’m sharing a quick photo tutorial and video to walk you through the process.

The process happens over several rounds. You make a knot on the first round, knit the knot stitches for the next three rounds and then make another knot to form a beautiful, oval/round design that very much looks like a gemstone cabochon to me.

In the pattern, the Lifted-Over Knot Stitch reads “using the right-hand needle pick up the 3rd stitch on the left-hand needle. Lift this stitch over the 1st and 2nd stitches forming a bar over those stitches. Then knit 1st st, yo, knit 2nd st.”

Here is a link to a short video of the process:

And here is a look at the process:

Lifted-Over Knot Stitch

Using the right-hand needle pick up the 3rd stitch on the left-hand needle. Lift this stitch over the 1st and 2nd stitches forming a bar over those stitches.

Knit first stitch, work a yo (yarn over) and then knit the second stitch.

Here’s a closer look at the next round. On the next round, you knit all 3 stitches. This forms that beautiful oval/round bit that I mentioned earlier. Knit all three knot stitches for two more rounds. That makes three knit rounds since working the Lifted-Over Knot Stitch.

Then work the knot stitch again. This completes the oval/round shape and makes it into the cabochon.
