Knitting: Fall Knitting Favorites

Fall is my favorite season! I always enjoy the change of one season to the next. And Fall is definitely my favorite with cool mornings, glorious colorful leaves, blustery winds, occasional cold rains, hot beverages, crisp evenings and it is finally, finally the right weather for wearing wool! It’s that magical window of time when wool is plenty warm enough and not too hot. And that means it is an especially great season for knitters.

First, I spent some time looking around to find out what others love best for fall knitting.

Here’s a quick look at a search of “Fall Knitting” on Pinterest: cabled sweaters, candy corn things, pumpkin things, hats, fingerless mitts and boot cuffs.

A quick search of “Fall Knitting” on Pinterest is a lot of fun. Mainly I found projects like cabled sweaters, candy corn hats, pumpkins things, hats, fingerless mitts and boot cuffs.

I also found several publications that pulled together lists of their most popular fall knitting patterns. A quick google search will find you lots of choices. I really enjoyed seeing Interweave list the top three from their 2017 publications and I Like Knitting collect their favorites.

Then I made my own list of my Fall Knitting projects that I’ve designed.

From top left to bottom right: Ren Fest Shawl, Salt River Sweater, Aurora Hat, Sedona Cowl, Emma and Grand Canyon Scarf.

Not only are the designs pictured here my favorites for the season, these 6 items are also the main knitwear garments that I wear during the Fall: the Ren Fest Shawl, Salt River Sweater, Aurora Hat, Sedona Cowl, Emma sweater and Grand Canyon Scarf. (Please note the links just above are to Ravelry listings. If you need to avoid Ravelry right now, the links to the same patterns on Etsy and LoveKnitting are below in the descriptions.)

The Ren Fest Shawl is a semi-circle worked from the top down with simple increases, garter stitch edging, section cables that continue from the top all the way through the bottom edge and complementary bottom cabled panels. This shawl boasts a generous wingspan allowing the bottom cable panels plenty of drape for a warm and cozy garment that feels fancy to wear. Perfect for festivals or an evening out. Cables are charted and written. Find the Ren Fest Shawl pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.

The Salt River Sweater combines an asymmetric center front cable panel with top-down construction and a stockinette stitch body. Salt River is a simple top-down seamless raglan with positive ease and subtle shaping for a relaxed fit. Written in 7 sizes. Cables charted and written. Find the Salt River Sweater pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.

The Aurora Hat uses simple knits, purls and basic cables to evoke the lovely glimmers and twists of dawn’s first light in the dark. Find the Aurora Hat pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.

The Sedona Cowl uses simple knits, purls and basic cables to evoke the vortexes in the Sedona area of Arizona. Cables are written and charted. Sedona Cowl is part of my Arizona Collection. Find the Sedona Cowl pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.

Emma is a simple top-down seamless raglan with positive ease, subtle shaping and a split hem for a relaxed fit. Written in 7 sizes. Cables charted and written. Find the Emma pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.

And finally the Grand Canyon Scarf. I left this one for last because it is my hands-down all-time favorite knitted piece to wear during the Fall. At 90″ long and 9″ wide it is my favorite length and width wear! Long enough to wrap around the neck one full time or to wear down straight. Wide enough to feel snugly and warm. Plus I love, love, love the project yarn (Malabrigo Rios in the color Sunset). The Grand Canyon Scarf uses simple knits, purls, decreases and increases to evoke the beautiful geology of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River that runs through it. No cables or cable needles! Find the Grand Canyon Scarf pattern on Ravelry, Etsy or LoveKnitting.
