Pattern Spotlight: Arizona Collection

Since we were just in Arizona last week, it seems fitting to spotlight my Arizona Collection this time – the Sedona Cowl published in September 2017, the Rock Art Shawl published in November 2017 and the Grand Canyon Scarf published in December 2017. The American Southwest is the place in the world where I feel the most like myself and the most grounded. These three designs are inspired by places in northern Arizona where we spent lots of time when we lived in the area. I am so very grateful we got a chance to take this recent family road trip and show these same areas to the boys for the first time. They’ve already seen the Grand Canyon and experienced it more intimately than most hiking down to Phantom Ranch with us in November of 2017. So we didn’t visit the Grand Canyon on this trip, but we did show them Sedona and some pretty great rock art.

The Sedona Cowl uses simple knits, purls and basic cables to evoke the vortexes in the Sedona area of Arizona. Vortexes are swirling centers of subtle energy coming from the surface of the earth. The Sedona Cowl is perfect for a quick, easy gift as well as a good introduction to cables. The cowl is extra-long for a draped-scarf feel. Cables are written and charted. Available through Ravelry, WEBS, LoveKnitting and Knit Picks.

The Rock Art Shawl uses simple knits, purls and basic cables to evoke the rock art or petroglyphs found in historical sites throughout Arizona. The main body of the Rock Art Shawl is a triangle worked from the top down in stockinette stitch with simple yarn over increases, garter tab cast-on (tutorial here), garter stitch edging and finished with cable panels. Available through Ravelry, WEBS and LoveKnitting.

The Grand Canyon Scarf uses simple knits, purls, decreases and increases to evoke the beautiful geology of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River that runs through it. No cables or cable needles! Available through Ravelry, WEBS, LoveKnitting and Knit Picks.

All three designs are worked in Malabrigo Rios color 096 Sunset. I really love this yarn and the way it helps the cables pop. Plus it is a real joy to knit.
